Solar-Sight: Beauty and Disability (From my perspective)

solar-sight:

It bothers me when able-bodied people post things about people with disabilities, and comment about how beautiful they are. Not because they aren’t beautiful, but because half of the people making that compliment, are doing so out of pity and dishonesty. If you look at someone like me, who was…

Honestly.

This is Charlotte, she is five and does not walk. She has very few friends. She goes to therapy 5 days a week. She was born disabled. Her condition is called schizencephaly, meaning while she was growing during pregnancy she had a stroke.

Causing big pockets of her brain to not form and fill with liquid. She is about two years behind kids her age.
She scoots around on her bottom.
Also she has limited usage of her left arm and hand.

She wears braces for her feet to stand straight, and some on her knees to keep them stable. She has leg tremors and her eyes bounce due to this condition.

Charlotte is an able child who wants to learn.
She wants to run and jump.
Charlotte wants friends but they are to active for her to keep up with.

The saddest part is having to answer why she can’t walk, and why she isn’t the same.
Imagine being a mom and not being able to help your daughter grow.

I thought of you today;
A gust of wind blew your sent across my nose.
Arising parts of you I’d tried so desperately to stow away.
Quick change of pace, and even quicker way of distracting my senses.
You had me.

8-years ago, CHP Officer Kevin Briggs talked this young man out of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. That young man’s name is Kevin Berthia. Today he is 30 years old and married with 2 children. This week he presented Officer Briggs with an award on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The story of how Officer Briggs talked Kevin down is remarkable. As you can see in the picture, Kevin is literally one step away from jumping to his death. But for more than hour, the officer listened to Kevin pour his heart out about his troubles and told him, “I know you think things are bad, but they can get better.”Kevin says, “Officer Briggs never made me feel guilty for the situation I was in. He made feel like, I understand why you are here, but there are alternatives”Kevin is just one of countless lives Briggs has saved over his 23 year career.Briggs, who was promoted to Sergeant five years ago, is humble about what he does. He says, ”they make the decision, when they step back over that rail it takes a tremendous amount of courage”I salute Sergeant Briggs!Photo: The San Francisco Chronicle, John Storey

I admire people who take responisibility like that for other people’s life. Thank you for being the brave person you are!

May 19th is Schizencephaly Awareness Day. I would love it if all my followers and non followers would wear yellow and Blue on that day. My best friend’s son has Schizencephaly, and it’s delayed him in so many ways. I just want to help raise awareness for this! So remember, wear YELLOW AND BLUE on…
